Female Trouble (after Kenneth Anger), 2024, vintage leather jacket with various studs, pins and badges on metal and fabric mannequin, 72cm height 65cm width 34cm depth.
Female Film Club - Female Trouble (after Kenneth Anger) 2024, is a self-portrait of my music and filmic life up until now. The badges and pins on the front of the jacket are from my personal collection; merchandise I have collected from gigs and record stores to immortalise my obsessions; all with a nod back to John Water’s film Female Trouble.
Female Film Club - Female Trouble (after Kenneth Anger) pays homage to the dissident, underground cinema of the 1960’s and 70’s. The combination of leather jacket and chrome studs fetishizing the wearer. Associated with bikers, high-fashion and punk rock, the leather jacket is a subversive, hyper-masculine and totally queer item of clothing – especially when it has been studded, pinned and badged.
Taking cues from Kenneth Anger’s “Scorpio Rising” (1963) in which embellishments, sexual objectification and dirty, loud machinery seamlessly intertwine, and Marianne Faithful’s “The Girl on a Motorcycle” (1968), portraying a woman liberating herself from her marriage on her prized motorbike; Female Film Club - Female Trouble (after Kenneth Anger) is a queer-portrait in leather and chrome.
